What’s with the name?

This comes from the myth about the Earth being flat and resting on the back of a giant World Turtle propped up by a tower of larger and larger turtles. There’s a cosmological conundrum that poses the question of what the final turtle might be standing on. One answer is “Nothing! It’s turtles all the way down!” Studying ninja films is a little like that. You go deeper and deeper and it’s endless. Ninjas all the way down.

  1. I stumbled on your site after your American Ninja series review on Den of Geek. Allow me to pay my sincerest compliments.

    This may very well be the greatest site on the Internet. Your writing is superb, and your topic of choice — ninjas in pop culture — cannot be topped.

    The greatest school for ninjas in America (run by Stephen Hayes) is about 20 minutes from my house in Ohio, and you have no idea how disappointed I was to learn I cannot do half the things shown in American Ninja by attending the school. No matter.

    Please, for the love of all things ninjutsu, keep up the great work! I will now spend countless hours reading this site.

  6. Hello, and congradulations on an absolutely fantastic blog which, after only a few random readings, would appear to be a must for all lovers of ninja movies.

    My discovery of your blog came when, a decade or so after hearing a specific tune, I recalled how it heavily sampled audio and visuals (for the accompanying video) from an unknown 80s low-grade ninja film. By sheer luck I decided to try my blind luck and typed “silver ninja empire” in the search engine, and voilà, here I was.

    Thank you so much for your contributions to this universe; I have much to learn now, master. But I am no match for a ninja.

      • It can indeed be thankless and sometimes feels as a fruitless work of labour, but I see it as this way: perhaps your well written and absolutely perfect tone for such releases could indeed be the best, most complete source of reference for the genre in itself. I’ve always wondered whatever happened to that early-mid 80s ninja craze, and more importantly, whatever happened to all those (mostly) long forgotten films. Heck I recall hanging out just a little bit with a couple of “dudes” who were really into all the ninjing to the point of mimicking the sound effects of kicks and punches whenever they practiced! In any case, this is a wonderful blog which I look forward to read a little more about every day.

    Came here because I was searching for reviews of the so-bad-its-awesome Lustbader book ‘The Ninja’.

    If you weren’t across it already, I’d recommend the Way of the Tiger series – gamebooks of the 80s where the protagonist is a ninja with skills like spitting a needle dipped in poison (!!) at his adversaries.

      Thanks for the Way Of The Tiger prompt too. I read a couple of them back in the 80s and they’re on my list for something to revisit for the blog. I’ve, sadly, just not had much time lately for writing ninja stuff but am hoping this will change soon. 🙂 I did play the Avenger! game recently after writing about ninja video games which got me realising I should read the books again.

      Your blog looks like an insane undertaking – exactly the kind of thing that really impresses me! 🙂 I’ve bookmarked and will read as I go through the series! Thanks again for the comment! 🙂
